And that is exactly what makes choosing a photography location in Cape Town both exciting and slightly overwhelming.
If you're visiting Cape Town, planning a family holiday, expecting a baby, celebrating your engagement, planning a surprise proposal, or simply wanting beautiful photographs of your time here, the location can make a huge difference to the feel of your images.
So rather than simply giving you a list of the most photographed places in Cape Town, I've put together this guide to help you decide which location is right for you, what type of photography works best there, and when I would choose it.
Camps Bay — For the Classic Cape Town Photograph
If you want photographs that immediately say “Cape Town”, Camps Bay is hard to beat.
You have the Atlantic Ocean, the beach, dramatic mountain formations and the Twelve Apostles all coming together in one location. It's particularly beautiful towards the end of the day, when the sun moves towards the western horizon and the light becomes softer and warmer.
Camps Bay works beautifully for:

What I particularly love about photographing here is that you don't have to spend the entire session standing in one spot.
You can walk along the beach, let children play, walk barefoot through the sand, sit together on the rocks or simply allow the session to unfold naturally.
For couples, this makes Camps Bay especially beautiful for a more documentary-style session, because there is plenty to interact with rather than simply standing and looking at the camera.
Best for:
Sunset, couples, families, maternity and proposals.
Clifton — Beautiful, Quiet and More Intimate
Clifton has a slightly different feeling from Camps Bay.
The beaches are tucked between enormous granite boulders, the water is beautifully clear, and the surrounding landscape gives photographs a more intimate, sheltered feeling.
It is particularly lovely if you're looking for photographs that feel romantic and relaxed rather than obviously touristy.
Clifton can work beautifully for:

Holiday portraits
The rocks also give you a lot of variety during one session. You can move between sandy areas, rocky sections and ocean views without the photographs all looking the same.
For a couple wanting something a little quieter and more intimate, Clifton would be high on my list.
Bloubergstrand — The Table Mountain View
If your dream Cape Town photograph is you standing on a beach with Table Mountain behind you, Bloubergstrand is the obvious choice.
The wide stretch of coastline creates a completely different perspective from the Atlantic Seaboard.
Instead of photographing from the mountain towards the ocean, you're photographing towards Cape Town, with Table Mountain stretching across the horizon.
That makes Blouberg particularly beautiful for:

Landscape portraits
The open beach also gives you lots of room to move, which is perfect if you want photographs that feel natural rather than heavily posed.
Sunset is particularly beautiful here, especially when the sky begins changing colour behind the mountain.

Stellenbosch & the Cape Winelands — For That European Summer Feeling
Stellenbosch & the Cape Winelands — For That European Summer Feeling
It's beautiful for:

The Winelands are particularly suited to couples who want something romantic and editorial without feeling overly formal.
And because there are so many different environments within the area, you can often create a much more varied gallery than you could from one small beach.
Strand & Gordon's Bay — Don't Overlook the Helderberg Coast
If you're staying in the Helderberg area, you don't necessarily need to drive into Cape Town for beautiful photographs.
Strand and Gordon's Bay offer long beaches, dramatic coastal views, mountains and beautiful sunsets.
This area can be especially lovely for:

Lifestyle photography
There is also something to be said for choosing a location that doesn't require your entire family to spend an hour in the car before the session.
Sometimes the best location is simply the one that allows everyone to arrive relaxed.
Kirstenbosch — For Greenery, Mountains and Something Softer
If beaches aren't your thing, Kirstenbosch is one of the most beautiful alternatives.
Set against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, the gardens give you lush greenery, pathways, trees, botanical gardens and mountain scenery all in one place.
It feels completely different from the coastline.
This makes Kirstenbosch particularly beautiful for:

It is also wonderful if you're travelling with children because the environment gives them something to explore rather than asking them to stand still for photographs.
For families, I love locations where the children can move, run, explore and interact.
Those are usually the photographs that end up feeling the most like your family.
Kirstenbosch is also recommended by Cape Town Tourism as a more private and intimate proposal setting, with quieter areas away from the more dramatic tourist viewpoints.
Signal Hill — City, Ocean and Mountain in One Frame
For dramatic views without committing to a full mountain hike, Signal Hill is one of Cape Town's most rewarding locations.
From here you can see the city, Atlantic Ocean and surrounding mountains, giving you that unmistakable Cape Town landscape.
It can be beautiful for:
Surprise proposals
Engagement sessions
Couples
Elopements
Romantic portraits
Travel photography
Signal Hill is also particularly suited to proposals because you can combine the location with a picnic, sunset or another experience before or after the proposal.
Cape Town Tourism specifically highlights Signal Hill as a popular proposal location because of its sweeping city and ocean views.
One thing to remember:
Popular viewpoints can become busy, particularly around sunset, so if you're planning something private — especially a surprise proposal — the exact timing and positioning matter.
So, Where Should You Actually Have Your Photos Taken?
There isn't one universally "best" photography location in Cape Town.
The best location depends on what you want your photographs to feel like.
If you want iconic Cape Town:
Camps Bay or Bloubergstrand
If you want mountains:

But Here's the Thing About Choosing a Photography Location...
A beautiful location doesn't automatically create beautiful photographs.
The way you use the location matters.
For my sessions, I don't want you spending an hour standing in the same spot looking at the camera.
I want movement.
Walking.
Laughing.
Holding hands.
Children running ahead.
A couple taking a quiet moment together.
A pregnant mother feeling the movement of her baby.
The person you're proposing to turning around and realising what's happening.
The little moments between the "important" photographs are often the ones that become your favourites.
That's why I love locations that give us space to move and interact.
The beach isn't just a backdrop.
The forest isn't just a backdrop.
The vineyards aren't just a backdrop.
They become part of the story.
When Is the Best Time to Have Your Photos Taken in Cape Town?
For most outdoor sessions, I love early morning or late afternoon/golden hour.
The light is softer, the landscape tends to feel calmer, and we can create photographs with warmth and depth without fighting the harshness of midday sun.
But there isn't one perfect time for every location.
Cape Town's geography makes the light behave differently across the city, so the direction of the sun, mountains, ocean and surrounding landscape all matter when choosing your session time.
And sometimes the weather that looks less than perfect can actually create the most beautiful photographs.
A little cloud over the mountain?
Beautiful.
Wind moving through a dress?
Beautiful.
A child running barefoot through the sand?
